A couple of weeks ago we ran an event in Melbourne called Hybrid Cloud in 100 Days. For those in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Auckland we’ll be heading your way soon. In the meantime though, what are we on about?
Traditionally Hybrid Cloud implementations have been large, complex, long and resource intensive undertakings with mixed outcomes. We’ve seen many of them miss the mark by miles and think the current approach needs to be royally tipped on its head.
Before we talk about how to get this done, integrated and people trained all in 100 Days, let’s get ourselves on the same page about what Hybrid Cloud does;
It provides choice for workload placement
Through this choice, it provides cost effective, performant and predictable services ‘Now’
It provides access to new services as soon as they’re commercially available
Ensures the platform is highly available and reliable
Makes all services programmatically accessible
Creates consistency across day one and day two tooling across all clouds
So getting back to that 100 days. If we take a look back through the brief history of infrastructure, one theme emerges prevalent, convergence. From the beginnings of IT, distributed components found their way into centralised mainframes, disk shelves into arrays, servers into VMs, etc.
It was VCE however who really introduced Converged Infrastructure with the release of the vBlock, converging server, storage and some network into a modular semi-consumable rack. Several years later, Nutanix upped the game by introducing Hyper-Converged Infrastructure, putting compute and storage into the same modular node, no integration, simple management and no dedicated, expensive storage arrays.
However to get ourselves a Hybrid Cloud in 100 Days we’re going to need to set the convergence dial to 11. We think that means the time has arrived for Cloud-Converged Infrastructure
Cloud-Converged Infrastructure (CCI)
“A prescriptive stack of technology components allowing businesses to create applications, make intelligent use of data and innovate on a hybrid cloud platform without spending time selecting, installing, configuring, securing or optimising the infrastructure.”
CCI Technology - Time spent evaluating technologies the industry has already voted on is time wasted. Would any sane enterprise needing ITSM capability today not implement ServiceNow…nope. What percentage of Enterprises don’t use Infoblox for IPAM…not many, if any. The point is we should be spending our time designing the services our business wants, not debating the merits of one widget vs another.
CCI Process - If we drive the best technology with the same old processes, we’re going to come up short every time. If a process doesn’t add value or keep the business safe, then it has no place in a Cloud-Converged Infrastructure.
CCI People - To operate a hybrid cloud at scale using automation to promote efficiency, reliability and performance requires a different breed of engineering – Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is this model.
At this point, you’re thinking, “yeah Smith that’s easy to say not so easy to do”. Well we don’t believe in talking the talk without first walking the walk. We have customers at all stages of this new convergence roadmap.
